8 VINTAGE JAPANESE / CHINESE SUMI INK STICKS / SHODO CALLIGRAPHY w GOLD LEAF

Description

A set of 8 sumi ink sticks bought in Kyoto, Japan but made in China. We don't know their age. They appear to be very old and consequently would have been made in the old way and by hand. One of them is broke in the middle but can still be used . All others are in good condition.
On one side they have an image of a famous Chinese philosopher. On the other side a poem. On both sides the image and writing is in gold leaf on top of a design in the ink. On the sides of each stick it states they were made in Shanghai. (photo # 10). The case was made for these sticks and the inserts for the sticks were made to fit the shape of the
individual
sticks.
These were made to be used for calligraphy or painting or
as works of art by themselves.
They're 4 1/4 x 1 3/8 x 3/8 inches (11 x 3.5 x 1 cm)
