    Description

    This is a rare
    Nagoya Kiri Bo-dansu
    for documents. This
    Edo
    era
piece dates from the early to mid 1800's . Used for storing documents, money and other precious items it is made throughout of solid
    Kiri
    wood (cryptomeria). The hardware
make them very highly regarded all over Japan for the quality workmanship and intricate details.
    The
    ishodansu
or kimono chest was a special piece used to store one's most valued kimono as well as money, documents and other precious items.
There are numerous lock plates but the locks have over time become inoperable and no key is necessary and no risk of getting locked out.
This tansu chest is made of solid
    Kiri
wood (paulownia) with a natural finish. All the hardware is hand forged iron in a
    Kakute
(square) shape with the burnt lacquer finish
    .
This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina
    .
    It remains in
    fine antique condition
and should serve well for another century or more of use.  It measures 30" wide by 26" high by 19" deep (76 x 66 x 48 cm) plus a bit more for the hardware.  A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
    very solid and functional
    piece of furniture.
