This Matching Antique set is complete and includes a finely hand embroidered single ear headstall with a fine, hand forged & silver inlaid & engraved Gal Leg pattern bit, and finely handmade twist braided horsehair reins with colorful 6 pom pom and 6 teardrop decorations. Note that Western South of the Border leather items are scarce due to the horrendous tanning process that was used. Some items would self-destruct in weeks or months. High end South of the Border saddle makers used imported English leather for their saddles. Leather headstalls are the rarest horse trappings to find in fine condition, as the horse sweat would saturate the leather and make it more susceptible to tearing or deteriorating. These were utilitarian items made for use and were typically handed down from generation to generation. Thus, fine condition South of the Border headstalls are extremely scarce.
This Antique fine condition 3-piece headstall is a single ear style with 2 layers of leather that are stitched together; the inside liner is suede leather. All 3 leather pieces of the headstall are supple and match in color with hand-stitched Pitiado (cactus fiber) thread embroidery, en suite. The headstall measures about 20" from the top to the bottom of the bit loops when hanging, and about 36" from top to bottom of the rein chains as shown when hanging. The headstall is 3/4" wide, with 1/2" wide single ear band with a single row of pitiado (cactus fiber) embroidery and is secured by 2 matching domed silver inlaid and engraved buttons in a grape and leaf pattern consisting of raised individual silver inlaid grapes, silver inlaid and engraved leaves with a stippled (textured) background with line engraving and zig zag engraved stems. They are attached with mushroom shaped ends going through both thickness of leather, allowing the top straps to swivel. Both pieces of the 3/4" wide headstall have a double row of pitiado (cactus fiber) embroidery with large 1 3/4" diameter silver conchos with a leather sunburst backing where the bit is attached. Each concho is domed with 6 outside panels of silver embellishments; 3 fields with dozens of raised individual silver grapes, and 3 clusters of silver inlaid and engraved leaves with a stippled (textured) background with line engraving and zig zag engraved stems. The center domed button is silver inlaid in a 4 pie shaped panels with silver inlaid stippled background with line engraving. One side of the headstall is adjustable with silver inlaid and engraved fittings. The slightly domed oval buckle has 10 panels of silver embellishments; 5 fields with dozens of raised individual silver grapes, and 5 clusters of silver inlaid and engraved leaves with a stippled (textured) background with line engraving, and zig zag engraved stems. The end tip is silver inlaid and engraved with one panel of raised individual silver grapes, and 2 clusters of silver inlaid and engraved leaves with a stippled (textured) background with line engraving and zig zag engraved stems. The keeper dome button is silver inlaid and engraved with one panel of raised individual silver grapes, and one cluster of silver inlaid and engraved leaves with a stippled (textured) background with line engraving, and zig zag engraved stems. The headstall is in fine overall condition for its age.
The large fancy Antique hand forged, finely and ornately silver inlaid engraved Gal Leg bit is complete with all 3 sets of chains: 12" rein chains, large slobber chain and smaller lipping chain. This hand forged Lady Leg style bit is unmarked and made in the American style that was extremely popular by cowboys, vaqueros and charros on both sides of the border. The cheek pieces are about 7 3/4" long x 1 1/8" wide at the top, with dozens of ornate silver inlaid & zig zag engraved multiple patterns. Both the top and bottom edges of the bit are finely silver inlaid in dozens and dozens of striped patterns; a very time-consuming characteristic and demonstrates the attention to detail of the Maker. The cheek piece conchos that secure the mouth bar appear to be domed 3-dimensional cast silver, with the mouth bar pin peened to secure them. The stylized front slobber bar is a simple, functional thin Iron bar. The inside measurement of this bit at the ends of the mouth bar is about 4 5/8". The early style rounded port mouth bar that tapers toward the center has multiple bands of hand inlaid copper to help keep the horse's mouth moist as does the copper roller and 2 grooved figure 8 copper crickets. The fine period antique closed end twist braided black horsehair reins are supple, and about 70" long overall. The ends have the early style double loop strands with a small Turks head knot to secure the rein chains. There are 6 red and white pom-pom decorations, and 6 large, braided teardrop decorations made with orange, white and black twine that is slightly faded.
This is a Fine Quality matching Headstall, hand forged, ornate hand silver inlaid, & engraved Gal Leg bit with no missing silver inlays; all with a nice naturally occurring aged patina. Collectors love fine condition and patina in Matching set like this that are extremely hard to find. As is typical of Antique bits and spurs from South of the Border down Mexico way, none are Maker marked. This is perfect as a wall hanger or as a Western, Western Americana, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Bit, Bridle, Headstall, Old West, Horse man, Horse woman, Horse Trapping, Charro, Charrita, Folk art, Equestrian or Man Cave display. This set could still be used or kept as a fine Antique & conversation piece; all in fine, original condition, and a great investment. Circa 1920.
PROVENANCE: Note the bit has a lead collection tag from the Western Americana and Native American Iconic lifetime collection of Brad & Mary Watts, Scottsdale, Arizona natives. I obtained this piece from Brad many years ago and has been in my personal collection for decades. Most of their huge lifelong collection was sold at auction in September 2017 by Showtime Auctions.

If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller.
