This is a gorgeous steel cutter shank engraved Sterling Silver mounted bit, by the late Northern California bitmaker Pat Gonzales. The bit is overlaid with seven pieces of sterling silver down each black steel shank with a 5-1/4 inch wide by 3/8 diameter low curb mouthpiece. The steel shanks measure 7 inches long with a 2-1/2 inch purchase for a 2.8 to 1 leverage ratio. The bit brand new and never used does have a some very light rusting from storage as is typical of all steel bits. This is a very lightweight steel bit weighing a little over 12 ounces. Pat's bits were all hand made by him, and highly sought after by working and using horse trainers.
The low curb is a very mild bit, putting pressure mainly on the tongue and lips with a slight tongue relief that also applies slight pressure on the bars. This bit is generally considered a very mild mouthpiece, although this varies according to the leverage ratio, and improper use may make it harsh, since the majority of the bit pressure is applied on the sensitive tongue.
