Description
This listing is for an original
"⚓"
marked North & Judd low port curb bit. This bit is marked
with an Anchor on the left side below the upper ring which is the famous trademark for
North & Judd, a huge hardware company. The bit has had two 1-1/4 inch diameter sterling silver conchos with jeweler's bronze flowers mounted with a synthetic emerald in the center added to each side.
This bit is in well maintained pre owned condition with some light rusting. There is a crack in the synthetic emerald on the left side of the bit, please see the close up photo #6. The shank measures 5-1/2 inches long with a 2-1/2 inch long purchase for a 2.2 to one leverage ratio. The mouthpiece measures 5 inches wide with a low curb port measuring 1/2 inch in diameter. This is a great piece to use to start your collection or add to an existing collection.
Begun in 1832 as the North Company in New Britain, Connecticut, North & Judd made "saddlery hardware" and "tried to satisfy the needs of the rider". The business grew quickly and was a supplier to the U.S. army during the Civil War and again during the Spanish-American war and even during World War I. North & Judd produced a wide range of metal buckles, rings, bits, hooks, chains, and other related goods besides the bits and spurs for which they are famous. Their trademark was an anchor usually stamped near the button, but sometimes on top or below the shank.
